Curbside Garbage & Recycling Collection

The City of St. John’s collects curbside garbage weekly and recycling bi-weekly. Here’s a quick list of everything you need to know for garbage collection:

Rules and Tips for Curbside Garbage and Recycling Collection:

  1. Garbage and recycling are to be placed at the curb on the schedule day, no earlier than 6 a.m. and no later than 8 a.m.
  2. You may place a maximum of 10 garbage bags, as well as an unlimited amount of recycling bags, each collection day. Bags must be regular size (66 cm x 82.5 cm).
  3. Each bag must weigh less than 50 pounds.
  4. Do not use chemicals (e.g. bleach) on garbage bags as an animal repellent.• Hypodermic needles and other sharp objects must be placed in a puncture proof container prior to placing in the garbage.
  5. Broken glass must be clearly marked and placed to prevent the glass from sticking out of the container.
  6. Recycling must be put in regular sized (66cm x 82.5 cm) see-through blue bags only.• Garbage must be placed in a bin or covered with an approved net or blanket from April 1 to November 30. All garbage must be completely covered.
  7. Do not place bags of garbage or recycling on snow banks as it can be out of reach for the collectors.
  8. Garbage must be put in a regular sized (66cm x 82.5 cm) garbage bag. Garbage must not be in smaller supermarket sized or kitchen catcher bags or in larger industrial or yard waste bags.
  9. Containers of liquid will not be collected.
  10. Cardboard can be in a bag or broken down and bundled with overall dimensions not exceeding 2 feet by 2 feet by 1 foot.
  11. Ensure your garbage container is clean.
  12. Bundled materials (branches, carpets, etc) must be less than 2 feet in length and have overall dimensions not exceeding 2 feet by 2 feet by 1 foot.
  13. Garbage can be put in any colour bag – including clear, colourless bags – except for see-through blue.
  14. When using a bin to cover your garbage, weigh it down so that it will not blow around once empty.
  15. Recycling does not need to be covered, but you can cover it, especially on windy days.
  16. The lid or cover of your bin should be tied to the main body of the container.
  17. Rinse your food containers before recycling them.
  18. Garbage bins or nets must be removed from the curb by 8 p.m. on the day of collection.
  19. Fixed garbage containers are not permitted.
